A historic decision on the future of the Internet, a fierce debate about the colour of a dress, John Travolta being John Travolta…it’s been a pretty busy week for the Internet. To make sure you’re not out of the loop, here’s what you might have missed:
Net Neutrality Wins
Part of what makes the Internet great is how it’s a level playing field for everyone to reach one another. Many large media companies wanted to go ahead and ruin that for everyone by charging huge amounts of money for faster connections, which would essentially make it impossible for smaller businesses and creators to reach people. Thankfully, the FCC realized that this was a really, really, really bad idea, and went ahead and declared broadband Internet as a public utility. John Travolta Creeps Everyone Out
After infamously flubbing Idina Menzel’s name as Adele Dazeem at last year’s Academy Awards, John Travolta finally had a chance to redeem himself this past Sunday. It seems like Menzel has forgiven him, but that didn’t stop Travolta from once again doing something weird and creating yet another embarrassing meme.
This time, the Internet was really creeped out by how touchy-feely he was. In addition to latching onto Menzel’s face for most of their dialogue, he got a little too close for comfort on the red carpet with Scarlett Johansson. Redditors wasted no time working their Photoshop skills, and here are some of the best creations:
What’s The !#$&@ Colour Of This Dress?!
A fierce debate took over social media, with people trying to decide what the colour of this dress that was posted on Tumblr is: black & blue or white & gold. Wired gave a great explanation behind the science of it, but basically it all has to do with how light enters our eyes and how our brains process it. The way that the background of the picture is lit is tricking a lot of people into seeing the dress as white & gold. As it turns out, when you see the dress in a different context, it’s actually black & blue:
New Pee-Wee Herman Movie on Netflix
Judd Apatow has teamed up with Paul Reubens to create a brand new Pee-Wee Herman film for Netflix! Hopefully the film isn’t too far away, with filming set to begin in just a few weeks. Get the full story from Pee-Wee himself here.
And finally, Redditor ketchuppacket reminded us all that we’re not exactly the best judges of what’s cool when we’re younger. He posted the above photo with the caption, “when my daughter asks why she can’t wear things she thinks are ‘cool’, I show her this photo from my freshmen year in high school.” The cringe-worthy picture went on to quickly make it to the top page of Reddit, and made us all immediately go to our old yearbooks and check out our own “cool” photos from back in the day.
