Can I just let Hover automatically renew my domains?

You bet! In fact, we recommend that you set your domains to auto-renew so you don’t have to worry about missing a reminder, forgetting to renew a domain, and having your website go offline. We’ll send you a few reminders in the weeks and days before your renewal date to make sure you aren’t surprised when it’s renewed.

What happens if my domain expires?

If your domain expires, any associated services (like a website or email) will stop working. Once expired, most domains enter a 34-day grace period, during which they can still be renewed from your Hover control panel without any additional fees. After the grace period, the domain is returned to the domain registry, where it enters the redemption phase.

During the redemption phase, we can attempt to redeem your domain, but there is a redemption fee in addition to your renewal fee. Also, the redemption period varies depending on the domain extension (.com, .org, etc.). For these reasons, we highly recommend setting your domains to auto-renew.

Do I have to pay for my domain name every year?

Domains are priced on a per-year basis. You can choose to renew your domain for more than one year at a time, if you like. This allows you to pay up front for multiple years of registration. Alternatively, you can turn on auto-renew for your domain, so Hover can automatically renew it and process payment every year, no action required on your part.

Can you renew an expired domain?

In most cases, yes, as long as the domain is in its “grace” or “redemption” period. Once a domain expires, it enters a grace period. For most domains, this period lasts 34 days. During the grace period, you can renew your domain from within your Hover account through the usual process. When the grace period has passed, the domain enters a redemption period and is returned to the registry. Once it’s in the redemption phase, you can usually redeem the domain by paying a $175 redemption fee, plus your renewal cost. Often, the redemption period is 30 days, but this depends upon the specific domain extension (.com, .org, .etc). Each registry sets its own rules about the lifecycle of their domains. If you want to reclaim a domain name that's in redemption, please reach out to our support team. If you want to avoid paying the redemption fee, you can instead wait until your domain is released back to the market to re-register it. However, there is a risk that someone else could register the domain before you do.
