.IO is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the British Indian Ocean Territory, a tiny group of islands about halfway between Africa and Singapore. The area has served as a hub for military activity, since it’s a middle point between the continents on the eastern side of the globe.
Despite the TLD’s ties to the islands (also known as Chagos Islands) there are no residency requirements, so anyone in the world is able to grab a .IO domain for their websites.
Why Would I Want a .IO Domain?
If you’re from the Chagos Islands, a .IO domain is a great way to represent your homeland online. Chances are, though, that you’re not from the area. The population is an estimated 3,000 people, many of whom are military personnel. Plus, 2,000 locals were forcibly removed by the British authorities in the 1960s…but this might be a bit beyond the scope of a TLD article. The point is, not a lot of people live there.
.IO is actually a quite popular TLD, but for an entirely different reason: its relation to technology. ‘IO’ is an abbreviation for input/output, aka the relationship between a device (such as a computer) and a person. Using a .IO TLD will convey an image of human-technology interaction to anyone seeing your domain. If your company is involved with hardware, software or really anything to do with computing, .IO might be just the perfect choice. Plus, you’ll have better odds of finding the exact domain name you’re looking for than if registering a more commonly-used TLD.
If you’re considering .IO then you might also want to check out the following related TLDs before making your decision (or better yet, buy all of ‘em just to be safe):
