Our friends at Maximum Fun have recently launched a Kickstarter project to fund a new web series, Brian & Lindsay Will Totally Eat That. It’s a show where a random food item is thrown at hosts Brian & Lindsay, and then they totally eat it. Once they eat it, they then talk about their experience and assign it an arbitrary score. To top it all off, they then register a silly domain name for the episode to live at (like chocolate.shoes). So naturally we’re pulling out all the stops to help get this thing made.
How The Challenge Works
Maximum Fun is seeking out $30,000 to help pay the talent, director, cinematographer, camera operators, producers, editors, and of course the food. To help, we’re going to throw in $10,000. That’s a lot of chocolate Twizzlers.
But here’s the catch: We’re only going to contribute once the project has received $10,000 in pledges. So even though we’re going to fund ⅓ of the project, it’s still going to require your help.
Why You Should Pledge
The Maximum Fun network’s main source of income comes directly from their listeners. According to owner Jesse Thorn, this ensures that they are able to produce content exactly how their audience wants it.
“Ultimately, we want our loyalty to be to the people that consume the content,” he explains. “We don’t want to get to the end of a month and have a deficit on the books and say ‘ok, I guess we have to take that Pall Mall ad where we smoke cigarettes into the microphone.’”
Luckily, their listeners have been very generous in the 10+ years since Maximum Fun first started. People have been generously donating to help fund their favourite programs, even when there’s nothing stopping them from getting it for free.
“I think that Internet culture has made people more likely to voluntarily pay for things,” Thorn explains, “because they understand that they are the patron of the things that they care about and that those things wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for their support.”
It’s for this reason that Thorn wants to make it clear that your support goes directly towards those involved with creating your favourite shows. “When you donate to Maximum Fun, you’re not donating to some big weird thing. You are literally directly donating to the shows that you listen to. Maximum Fun is essentially a passthrough for the money.”
